VA Aid and Attendance in San Diego
Aid and Attendance may help eligible veterans or survivors with care-related financial needs, but it is not automatic reimbursement for assisted living. Confirm eligibility and the application process before building it into a residential budget.
Reading about care is one thing; knowing which homes have a room this week and what they are actually charging is another. That part we find out for you, and it costs your family nothing.
Understand the pension connection
VA describes Aid and Attendance as an additional monthly amount for eligible pension recipients who meet specified care-related criteria. It is different from simply having served in the military or being enrolled in VA health care. Official source
Pension eligibility has service and financial requirements. Survivors may have a separate pension pathway, so ask an accredited representative which application and evidence apply.
Document the need for assistance
VA’s criteria include needing another person’s help with activities such as bathing, feeding or dressing, along with other qualifying circumstances. A medical examiner supplies required examination information. Official source
Collect a clear description of daily limitations, medical records requested by the representative, and relevant care expenses. Use the current VA instructions rather than assuming an old checklist is sufficient.
Use accredited local assistance
San Diego County’s Office of Military & Veterans Affairs offers benefits counseling, claims preparation and assistance for veterans, dependents and survivors. It can help identify the appropriate route. Official source
VA also provides a way to find accredited representatives. Accredited VSO claims assistance is free; attorney and claims-agent fees follow different rules. Verify credentials rather than accepting a sales referral as proof of accreditation. Official source
Avoid commitments based on an unapproved benefit
Benefit amounts and financial limits change, and individual awards depend on the claim. Use current VA guidance and a personalized review instead of a fixed dollar promise.
Do not transfer assets, buy financial products or sign an unaffordable care contract solely to pursue eligibility without independent qualified advice. Maintain a plan for paying care costs while a claim is pending.
Questions families ask
- Can someone receive Aid and Attendance and Housebound benefits together?
- VA states that these two pension additions cannot be received at the same time. Ask which, if either, fits the claimant’s circumstances.
- Does a placement advisor approve the benefit?
- No. VA determines eligibility and the award. A placement service cannot guarantee approval, the payment amount or when a decision will arrive.
