Assisted Living on Social Security in San Diego
When Social Security is the main source of income, an assisted living search needs to begin with a written budget and a benefits review. Finding a low advertised price is not enough if essential care or future increases remain unaffordable.
Reading about care is one thing; knowing which homes have a room this week and what they are actually charging is another. That part we find out for you, and it costs your family nothing.
Identify the income and benefits involved
Social Security retirement or disability benefits are not the same as Supplemental Security Income, or SSI. The type of benefit matters when evaluating means-tested assistance and residential payment arrangements.
List reliable monthly income, personal expenses, savings and any sustainable family contribution. Do not count a pending benefit application as approved income.
Request a complete assessed quote
Ask each residence for the room charge, required care charges and additional expenses based on the person’s current assessment. Explain the financial limit early rather than touring homes that cannot fit the budget.
Discuss rate increases and what happens if savings run down. A residence’s willingness to accept a move-in payment does not establish a long-term funding solution.
Explore Medi-Cal pathways carefully
For eligible people in San Diego, the Assisted Living Waiver may fund authorized care services at participating settings. It has specific clinical and Medi-Cal requirements and does not pay room and board. Official source
Ask a care coordination agency how the participant’s housing payment works and whether an appropriate participating opening is available. Social Security income alone does not establish waiver eligibility or guarantee a bed.
Compare alternatives rather than accepting an unsafe fit
If residential care is not financially workable, ask about supports that could make home safer, including IHSS when eligible. County Aging & Independence Services can help identify local resources at 800-339-4661. Official source Official source
Subsidized housing may reduce rent but does not itself provide assisted living care. Consider accessibility, waitlists and the separate cost of personal assistance before treating a housing option as a care solution.
Questions families ask
- Is there a guaranteed assisted living option for anyone receiving Social Security?
- No. Suitability and affordability depend on care needs, provider terms, available openings and eligibility for any additional programs.
- Should I sign while a benefits application is pending?
- Only if there is a workable way to pay under the contract without assuming approval. Review cancellation and refund terms and seek qualified advice when the financial risk is significant.
