A budget that reflects the care
The Cost of Senior Care in San Diego
A useful care budget answers two questions: what will this arrangement cost now, and what happens if more help is needed? A citywide average cannot show the financial effect of overnight supervision, transfer assistance or a second move.
Reading about care is one thing; knowing which homes have a room this week and what they are actually charging is another. That part we find out for you, and it costs your family nothing.
Compare equivalent care plans
For home care, estimate paid hours across a full week, including weekends and overnight needs. Include housing expenses that continue even when a caregiver is present.
For residential care, request an individualized quote covering the room and assessed support. For nursing care, separate the facility’s charge from the amount an insurer has actually authorized.
Find the costs outside the headline price
Ask about medication services, continence supplies, escorting, transportation, special diets, move-in charges and care reassessments. Confirm whether deposits are refundable and what notice is required to leave.
A shared room and a private room may have different availability as well as different pricing. Obtain a written explanation of how room changes and temporary hospital absences affect billing.
Separate insurance from personal spending
Medicare’s skilled nursing benefit is conditional and time-limited; it is not a general benefit for ongoing residential personal care. Review the official coverage rules with the discharge planner or plan. Official source
Medi-Cal programs may support eligible care services, but the Assisted Living Waiver does not pay room and board. Do not treat program eligibility as proof that every housing expense is covered. Official source
Include advice fees and a contingency plan
Ask any placement or care-advisory service whether the family pays, whether facilities pay referral fees, and whether financial relationships limit the options presented. Not every service uses the same fee model.
Calculate whether the arrangement remains affordable if care charges rise or a funding application takes longer than expected. Keep a written fallback plan rather than committing money on the assumption that benefits will be approved.
Questions families ask
- Can you give a guaranteed monthly price without an assessment?
- A dependable quote requires current care information and a specific provider. Published starting prices may exclude services your relative needs.
- Will Medicare pay assisted living rent?
- Medicare does not generally pay assisted living room, board or ongoing custodial care. Separately covered medical services may still be available to an eligible resident.
