Assisted Living in San Diego
Choosing assisted living starts with the help a person needs on an ordinary Tuesday: getting dressed, taking medications, eating comfortably and moving safely. A beautiful building matters less if those needs cannot be met reliably.
Reading about care is one thing; knowing which homes have a room this week and what they are actually charging is another. That part we find out for you, and it costs your family nothing.
What assisted living does—and does not—provide
California licenses assisted living settings as Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly, or RCFEs. They provide nonmedical care and supervision; they are not the same as skilled nursing facilities. Review the state’s explanation of facility types before comparing options. Official source
Ask how medication assistance, bathing, toileting and nighttime calls are handled. Visiting clinicians may provide additional services, but their visits do not turn the residence into a nursing facility.
Build a care profile before touring
Write down what your relative can do independently, what needs prompting and what requires hands-on assistance. Include falls, overnight waking, swallowing concerns and any recent hospital changes.
Share the same information with every admissions team. A meaningful assessment should connect these needs to available staffing and identify conditions the residence cannot manage.
Choose a location that supports real visits
Compare the actual drive from the people most likely to visit, not just the distance on a map. A residence in North County may be practical for one family and difficult for relatives commuting from South Bay.
Consider access to existing physicians, preferred hospitals, accessible transportation and familiar language or cultural routines. Ask whether appointment escorts are provided or must be arranged separately.
Review records, routines and total charges
Use California’s licensing resources to find inspection information and learn how to review a facility file. Ask the administrator to explain significant findings and corrective action. Official source
Request a written estimate based on the assessed care level, not only the advertised room price. Compare staffing during evenings and weekends, meal assistance, activity access and the process for changing care fees.

Questions families ask
- Does assisted living include round-the-clock nursing?
- Not necessarily. An RCFE offers nonmedical care and supervision. Confirm nursing availability and whether any clinical tasks require outside providers or a different care setting.
- Can we tour before a hospital discharge?
- Often, but admission still depends on assessment, paperwork, a suitable opening and the residence’s ability to meet current needs. A tour alone is not acceptance.
