Two settings, different responsibilities
Home Care vs. Assisted Living in San Diego
The choice between home care and assisted living is often a choice about who organizes daily support. Staying home preserves a familiar setting; residential care combines housing and assistance but requires adapting to a shared environment.
Reading about care is one thing; knowing which homes have a room this week and what they are actually charging is another. That part we find out for you, and it costs your family nothing.
Compare the help available across a full day
Map out mornings, meals, medications, toileting and overnight needs. For home care, identify the hours a paid worker will cover and who responds outside those hours.
In assisted living, ask how staff are assigned and how long residents may wait when several need help. Having staff in the building is not the same as continuous one-to-one attention.
Consider the home itself
Stairs, narrow bathrooms, poor lighting and difficult exits can make care harder even with a capable caregiver. Ask a relevant clinician or therapist about equipment, transfers and practical safety changes.
Residential care also requires an accessibility review. Tour the actual room and bathroom, and consider whether a move would simplify daily life or create new confusion and distress.
Build an honest cost comparison
Include paid hours, minimum shifts, overnight arrangements, household expenses and backup coverage in the home-care estimate. Do not assign unlimited unpaid labor to relatives without their agreement.
Compare that total with an assessed residential quote including room, meals and care extras. Neither option is automatically less expensive; the result depends on the intensity and reliability of support needed.
Choose a plan that can adapt
A trial of added home support may clarify whether home remains workable. Define signs that trigger reassessment, such as repeated falls, unsafe exits or a caregiver unable to sleep.
For eligible San Diego residents, IHSS can help with authorized services at home. Assisted living is a different setting with separate licensing and payment arrangements. Official source Official source
Questions families ask
- Is home care the same as home health?
- No. Home care commonly refers to help with daily activities. Home health involves clinical services ordered and delivered under applicable medical and coverage requirements.
- Can home care and residential care be combined?
- Sometimes a resident hires additional private support, but the residence must approve the arrangement and clarify responsibilities. Added help does not remove the facility’s own obligations.
